Lost snowmobiler rescued after spending night in frigid wilderness

Kacey Hebdon, 20, was found Monday afternoon after spending a stormy Sunday afternoon and frigid night in the Copenhagen Basin area.

“He’s okay,” said Franklin County Sheriff David Fryar.

The group of snowmobilers Hebdon was riding with on Sunday lost track of him at Clutch Point when he went off on his own and blizzard conditions quickly rolled into the area.

Franklin County Sheriff’s officers and Search & Rescue units were dispatched to the area, as well as Search & Rescue units from Bear Lake County.

White-out conditions required the search for Hebdon to be called off at 2 a.m., said Fryar. Rescuers started up again at 6 a.m. Monday, and were assisted by about 30 additional snowmobilers from the area.

One of them, Bucky McKay, found Hebdon and used his cell phone to alert the county’s dispatch office at about 4:50 p.m. today. “He was cold, thirsty and hungry, but he was okay,” said Fryar.

The sheriff said storm conditions never let up during the search, and rescuers had crossed the area in which Hebdon was found several times.

How he survived the storm won’t be known until the department has a chance to get him off the mountain, said Fryar.
